There's a lot of debate out there about fan fiction's legal status, and that has led to a wide variety of opinions about maintaining compliance with copyright and trademark law. I've seen attitudes ranging everywhere from flagrant disregard of copyright, to the idea that anything unlicensed is illegal plagiarism.
I personally consider most unlicensed fan fiction to fall under "fair use" provisions of trademark and copyright law. However, I'm pretty conservative about it, especially since I myself have been plagiarized. That means I intend to make it clear who, exactly, owns the copyrights to various pieces of this site. So let's make it clear:
Fan works on this site are intended for entertainment purposes only and are not licensed or approved by the copyright holders. No compensation has been received or will be accepted for these works, and no actual copyright or trademark infringement is intended or should be implied. Further, any misidentification of television shows' copyright holders is unintentional and will be corrected upon proper notification.
I do not support the idea of "real person" fan fiction. Fan fiction is supposed to be fiction, including its characters. Any resemblance to real persons or situations is coincidental.
In short, I consider unlicensed fan fiction to be an enjoyable hobby and a potential exercise in creativity, but that's all. I also support the "play nice" attitude within the fan community. We're supposed to be here to have fun.
